Luncarty to Pass of Birnam

The £99 million Luncarty to Pass of Birnam project opened to traffic in August 2021.

The contractor responsible for undertaking the dualling works was Balfour Beatty.

Dualling the 5.9 mile (9.5km) Luncarty to Pass of Birnam project included one new grade-separated junction and one left-in/left-out junction, four new bridges over the A9, new access roads and lay-bys and new and upgraded paths and cycleways including three new crossings of the A9.

Community benefits delivered during construction included employment for 65 new entrant positions, against a target of 30. In addition, seven apprentices and four graduates were appointed, even though four places had originally been identified. The project team also visited 77 schools and engaged with more than 4,046 pupils and students from nursery to university level, opening their eyes to possible careers in engineering and construction, and encouraging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects from an early age, far exceeding the target of 12 engagement events set at the outset of the contract.

Details of the design and planning stage, including environmental mitigation measures, and relevant documentation such as made orders and environmental statements can be viewed on Transport Scotland website.
